It is in the fundamentals that this book makes its greatest contribution: the principles and the most fundamental problems come first - they are identified, stated and solved. The book teaches not only structure but also technique. The structure of the field is drawn with very sharp lines: external versus internal convection, forced versus natural convection, combined convection and conduction, and phase change. The book begins with the simplest problem solving method (scale analysis), and moves on to progressively more advanced and exact methods (integral method, self similarity, asymptotic behavior). New to this edition will be; 1) coverage of how convection affects performance, and how convective flows can be configured so that performance is enhanced, 2) how convective configurations have been evolving, from the flat plates, smooth pipes and single-dimension fins of the earlier editions to new populations of configurations: tapered ducts, plates with multi-scale features, dendritic fins, duct and plate assemblies (packages) for heat transfer density and compactness, etc.., and finally 3) new, updated, and enhanced examples and problems will reflect the author's research and advances in the field since the last edition.
